SMART strengthens lead in US interactive whiteboard market

Record sales in Q3 give SMART 15 point category share increase over Q2 SMART Technologies announces its continued leadership of the interactive whiteboard product category in the United States with the sale of over 64,000 SMART Board(TM) interactive whiteboards - its strongest sales quarter in history. SMART experienced the largest increase in category share of any interactive whiteboard manufacturer finishing Q3 with 66.6 percent category share, up more than 15 points from Q2 and more than three times that of its next closest competitor. The data comes from a recently released report from Futuresource Consulting, an industry-leading global research company that has tracked interactive whiteboard sales for eight years. The report states there were more than 96,000 interactive whiteboards were sold in total during Q3 in the United States. SMART was also reported as the leader across all interactive whiteboard product categories in the United States. For example, SMART shipped 70.6 percent of all interactive whiteboard systems (whiteboard plus short-throw projector) in Q3, 46.3 points higher than its closest competitor. With regard to screen sizes larger than 65" (165 cm) on the diagonal, SMART's Q3 category share in the United States was 67.1 percent, which is up more than 22 points from Q3 in 2007 and is more than two and half times its closest competitor. In all, more interactive whiteboards were sold in the USA than the rest of the world combined and Futuresouce predicts that one if four US classrooms will have an interactive whiteboard by the second quarter of 2009.
Globally SMART shipped over 100,000 SMART Board(TM) interactive whiteboards - the largest number of units any manufacturer has sold in any single quarter. The company entered Q3 with a substantial order book and increased production to meet demand within the quarter. Orders were strong throughout Q3 and leading into Q4. The Futuresource report indicates that SMART continues to sell more interactive whiteboards than all other competitors combined for the third straight quarter in 2008.
